Flea allergy dermatitis in Bull Terriers
- A single bite is enough in a sensitised dog, and the flea is usually groomed away long before you go looking for it.

Why you will not find a flea
This is the part that sends owners down the wrong path. A dog with flea-bite hypersensitivity is not reacting to an infestation; it is reacting to the saliva from one bite. The immune response takes hours to build, by which time the flea has moved on or been groomed off, and there is nothing to find.
So "I checked and there are no fleas" is not evidence of anything. What is worth checking instead is flea dirt in the bedding: comb the dog over a damp white cloth and look for dark specks that smear rust-red. That is digested blood, and it means fleas, present or recent.
The other thing worth knowing is that the adult fleas on a dog are a small fraction of the population. The overwhelming majority is eggs, larvae and pupae in carpet, bedding and floorboard gaps. Treating only the dog leaves the reservoir intact.

None of this is absolute, and a dog can have two things at once. But the back-end concentration is characteristic enough that a Bull Terrier chewing at the base of its tail should have fleas ruled out before anything else is considered.
Hot spots, and what not to put on them
A hot spot is acute moist dermatitis: a patch that goes from nothing to a wet, red, painful, weeping area in a matter of hours, because the dog has chewed the same spot continuously. In a short-coated breed they spread fast, and the tail base is the classic site.
Getting on top of it properly
- Treat every pet in the household on the same day, with something your vet has recommended for the species and weight. Never use a dog product on a cat; some are lethal.
- Vacuum thoroughly: carpets, rugs, along skirting boards, under furniture, and the car. Put the bag straight in an outside bin.
- Wash all bedding at 60C, the dog's and any human bedding it sleeps on.
- Keep it up year-round. Central heating means fleas no longer have a closed season indoors, and in a sensitised dog a lapse of a few weeks is enough.
- Give it a month before judging. The environmental stages keep emerging for weeks after the adults are gone.
If the itch has not begun settling after four to six weeks of genuinely consistent prevention, that is useful information rather than a failure: it makes flea allergy much less likely and moves atopy and food reaction up the list.
